Beat the Street Caversham

Q. How do I get points?
A. Each time you touch your Beat the Street Card (BTS) on any two Beat Boxes you will earn points.  You need to touch two Beat Boxes to get your first 10 points.  Every Beat Box you touch after that will earn you another 10 points but it must be within an hour of touching the last Beat Box.  If more than an hour has elapsed since your last touch, you go back to the ‘start’ of your journey and only start earning points once you touch two Beat Boxes.

Q. How do I find out how many points I’ve earned?
A. Each time you touch your BTS card on a Beat Box, points will be added to your account and you can track your progress online.  Just key in your card number and/or register your card at caversham.beatthestreet.me.

Q. How does my school win?
A. The winning school is the one with the highest score. This is achieved by all those signed up in a school, walking the most over the three month competition period.

Q. I’ve lost my card; can I get a new one?
A. If you are a member of the general public, you can pick up a new card from your GP surgery, library or selected outlets in Caversham. Note there is a limit to the number of cards that can be registered to one person. If you are at school, then your keyfob is registered to you personally so that we can reward the winning pupils and schools. It is your responsibility to keep your card/keyfob safe. If you are at school and you lose your BTS card or fob, talk to your form tutor or email team@beatthestreet.me

Q. Can I cycle or skate instead?
A. If you are at school, you can choose to cycle or skate as long as your parents are happy and you follow all road safety tips, getting off your bike or scooter to touch your card on the Beat Boxes.

Q. What is cheating?
A. Cheating occurs when someone uses a card that is not their own or if motor vehicles are used instead of walking (or cycling/scooting). Any pupil at a school caught cheating will be removed from the competition and their walking records set to zero.  Keyfobs are personal to each child and if they are given to another person (including a parent) to gain points, this will be deemed as cheating.

Q. I think someone is cheating, who should I tell?
A. Talk to your form tutor or email team@beatthestreet.me and we will look into it.

Q. Can teachers join the competition?
A. Yes, teachers are encouraged to take part during the competition. Their points will be added to the school total.

Q. How do I earn money for charities?
A. For every 10 points earned, between 1p and 2p will be added to the total amount that will be donated to buy books for local schools and the library.

Q. How do I know where the Beat Boxes are?
A. The Beat Boxes are all shown on the online map [link to map] or on the large maps displayed at schools, in the GP surgeries or at the Library.

Q. A Beat Box didn’t beep and the lights didn’t flash, who do I tell?
A. Tell your form tutor if you are at school or email team@beatthestreet.me

Q. My card isn’t working; can I get a new one?
A. Please check your online account to check that it definitely isn't working. Either email team@beatthestreet.me or, if you are at primary school talk to your form tutor.
